Now let me preface this by stating that I don't believe in male and female photographers - I only see talented photographers and just because some of the most awesome photographers I know are female, like her, her and her, it doesn't mean the guys aren't any good too. 😉
But after having the umpteenth conversation with someone who i) "had no idea women could be photographers" or ii) "thought I was a guy because they thought my work was really good"?!?!, I thought I would share some of the reasons why women are such darn awesome photographers. (note: these conversations have only ever happened with men, so I take it with a pinch of salt). So why are female photographers so freakin' fabulous? I'm so glad you asked...
1) Women help you feel more comfortable
This relates especially to maternity and boudoir photography. Women are instantly more at ease with other women and this helps when you will be showing off more of your body and feeling a little exposed and / or vulnerable. The more comfortable you feel in front of the camera and photographer, the better your images will turn out. It's that simple. 🙂
2) Women know how to make other women look good
As women we spend so much time looking through magazines, sizing other women up both on TV and in person, so we have an innate sense as to which poses help a woman look her best - heck we practise them ourselves all the time. We definitely understand any body insecurities you may have and are able to take special care to ensure we focus attention on the areas you love and minimise focus on the less-loved areas of your body. Of course, guys can learn this too but we've got a head start as women - we just know!
3) We totally get it!
When it comes to weddings, I truly believe female photographers have the upper hand. Women are always touted as the more "emotional" sex and I think this comes in useful in emotion-laden events like weddings. We totally get that you may have been dreaming about this day since you were twelve and want it to be absolutely perfect. We pay attention to all the smallest details because we know they are important to you and we are able to anticipate particularly emotional moments to ensure we are always there to capture them as they happen. The way your groom patiently waits for you at the altar and then bursts into the biggest smile (or tears) when he sees you for the first time, the quiet moment you share with your dad just before he walks you down the aisle, preparing to hand his little girl over to another man - we get it, which means we capture these moments that men sometimes miss and quite frankly, don't always know to look for.
So those are just some of the reasons female photographers rock but when it does come down to it, there are a whole lot of factors to consider when picking a photographer. If you are a bride-to-be looking for a wedding photographer in Lagos, then definitely check out my top tips on picking the perfect wedding photographer for you right here. I'll be doing a similar post on picking portrait photographers in the future.
So what do you think? Are female photographers better than male photographers or is it vice versa or does it even matter at all? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Enjoy the rest of your week. 🙂

Thanks Chika. Definitely be confident, my mantra, anything guys can do, I can do better - lol. I think female photographers definitely need to support each other especially since we are in the minority in this market. Will be sure to check out your work. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
I agree that women make other women feel more comfortable! I do know there are some talented male photogs out there though, and I think ultimately it just comes down to stylistic preference.
Haha - most definitely. Some of my favourite photogs are men. At the end of the day, just need to go with someone who suits what you want. 🙂
Wow, I've never thought of it that way. And you're totally right. I feel like women definitely do make woman look better and feel better during a shoot. Nice post 🙂
Thanks Larianne 🙂
